Best of Yokosuka Introduction
by K.R. (grade 6)
The Best of Yokosuka project was an ELA vision that started in the summer of 2014. This vision has become a reality. The project started with the idea to help new teens transitioning to the Yokosuka base to learn more about their new home and to explore. You can always look at blogs, but what about the perspective from a kids view?
This project even got people who have lived here their whole lives out exploring new places. We are proud to have the title to be the first school in the Kanto Plain to have done something like this. We have all put countless hours into thinking about and finding and sharing the best places that we think the average teen would want to go to. From amusement parks that make your spine shiver to restaurants that tantalize your tastebuds, every single word we have typed has had some meaning to all of us.
The students started the Best of Yokosuka project in November 2014. Sixth graders gathered in the library to hear Mr. Kirchner, a local blogger, share tips on writing reviews. 7th and 8th grade teachers introduced their students to reviews and shared the vision, and YMS was off! After the introduction, you could tell that every single student was ready to go out and get cameras clicking, pencils scribbling, and minds going to work. You were able to hear all of this a mile away from Yokosuka base. Everyone was out there that it was so common to find one of your friends taking their notes and writing their reviews as you were doing yours. This project was putting our brains to work all while having fun doing it.
This project has made me see Yokosuka base in a whole new way. We want to thank every teacher that helped us and motivated us to keep writing better and we all wish to continue this next year and many more to come.
I wish the Best of Yokosuka project had been here for me to view when I first got to Japan years ago. But now all the new teens can look back years from now and say thank you to all of us that took the the time to type these reviews and we can sit back and tell our grandchildren's grandchildren that “oh yeah I remember doing that and did you kids know I was one of the first teens in Yokosuka to have done that!”
So with that I would like to thank the ELA department and everyone at YMS for an amazing real world project.
Teens, have fun exploring your world!
