Cup Noodles
Review by RC (Kahler)
Are you that college student looking at your noodles wondering, “Where did you come from?” Cup Of Noodles seem to be the staple of millions of college students around the world. This convenient and tasty meal is handy, easy to prepare and inexpensive, making it a go to dinner option for the busy and constantly broke student. So, ever wondered how those yummy noodles end up in that cool cup? Do you want to know the history? Well then go the Cup Of Noodle Museum in Yokohama. It is located at Shinko Naka-Ku, Yokohama, Japan, not far from the train station.
The building is not hard to spot. From the street you can see a giant Cup Of Noodles container welcoming you to the museum. There are fees though, so don’t show up without any yen! The admission fee isn’t that expensive running only five-hundred yen for adults and free for any high school student or younger.
If I were you, I would get there early because the last time you can get a ticket is at five o'clock. The closing time is at 6:00. If you can’t speak Japanese, there are some people who can speak English. They also have English brochures too.
Once you go in the building you will be able to see a staircase, cashier, a gift shop, and if you look up you’ll see that huge white Cup of Noodles cup. There will also be a stand with all the brochures. After you buy your ticket, you go up the staircase or the elevator in the back. You show your ticket to the agent. Go into an elevator to whatever floor you like. My personal favorite is on the 3rd floor. It is called the “My Cup of Noodles” exhibit.
At the “My Cup of Noodles”l exhibit you can make your own cup of noodles. The fee is in addition to the museum entrance fee and costs 300 yen per cup. First, they ask that you sanitize your hands. Then you can decorate your cup with the provided markers.
Once you have decorated your cup the way you like, you get in line to choose your flavor for the final soup. You are able to choose your soup flavor and four ingredients from the menu provided by the employees. Once you gone through the line and tell the person what you want, you can marvel at how they package the noodles in your personally designed container. You then crank a handle and see it packaged and sealed with the plastic shrink applied around the cup. Finally, you can put your finished cup of noodles in a bag and fill it up with air. The bubble around your creation helps protect it from damage and is a fun and easy way to carry your noodles.
There are other exhibits too. Like the Cup of Noodle playground which shows you how cup noodles are packaged with the source of play. There is the Instant Noodles
History Cube, and the Momofuku Theater. The Instant Noodle Cube is an exhibit that shows how the noodles were made throughout the years and The Momofuku Theater is a theater that shows the life of the creator and more.
Now, maybe you want to go there? I hope so! Here is how to get there from Yokosuka Naval Base. It is easy to get there by train. From Yokosuka Chuo go to the Minabmiro Station. The museum is a short walk from the station. While you are there, you can visit other sites that are nearby the museum. Other attractions in the area are Cosmo World, The Gift Shop , or even Queen’s Square Mall.
Whether you are a young college student, a middle school student or just a young-at-heart adult, you will love learning about the history of this favorite meal. The museum provides a day of learning and play, but best of all, you get to take home your very own, personally created noodlely treat of your very own.
