Sport Heaven
Review by AR (Kahler)
Are you new to Yokosuka, Japan and want to check out awesome new places? Well imagine a nice cool breeze, of a the of smell of fresh air, and you see a mountain with people climbing it, some kids playing a sport they love, and a lake to jump in. Would you like to join in but you don't have the right material to play with or appropriate clothing? Well this place will help you with that!
The Sport Xebio is a magnificent place to visit! It’s all over Japan and you can find everything that has to do with sports and sportswear. I chose this place because it fits in with my personality and is a mind blowing place to visit for your exploration in Japan.
Just to inform you if you are new to Japan and don’t know any japanese, than this is the perfect way of learning the basics. First off you must know how to say hello which is Kon'nichiwa in japanese, the time you should say this is in the afternoon because if you go in the store in the morning you should say ohayo gozaimasu which of course mean good morning like what I said. Another term you should know is thank you which is arigato and if you want to say thank you very much just say arigatou gozaimasu. Some more words are ha i and lie which is yes and no just in case if an employee ask if you need help which they would be saying Anata ga nani wo tasuke ga hitsuyōna nodesu ka, just say yes or no in japanese to answer them. These words should help you when you go shopping in the sport xebio but if you want to learn more just go on google or if you already have a phone you can download a japanese app to teach you more japanese.
If you want to visit more places around the Sport Xebio, well there are lots of places to visit. Right next to the Sport Xebio is a handy wear store called Homes. In the same building as the Sport Xebio is a Denny’s, 100¥ store called Daiso, and and small shoe store. On the third floor, just above the Sport Xebio is a pool where you can learn to swim but you will need a pass so I suggest to just take swim lessons at Purdy Gym on base. Just right across the street from the store is a Walmart that is called Livin and if you walk a couple of blocks to the left you will find a playground to play at with a rock climbing that leads to a place to slide down but you must use a piece of cardboard or you can buy a sled that looks like a shovel at Livin. There are more places across the street from the Sport Xebio but i’ll leave that for you to discover.
Now lets talk about the Sport Xebio itself. This store has every single sport items you can ever think about! Let's say you want to buy a swimsuit for swimming, well they carry many types of swimsuits for your choice of selection. Some Sport Xebios around Japan have some different items in stock so they might not have the item you want.
Now are you ready to get to one of the Sport Xebio near Yokosuka? Well this is the way to get to the Sport Xebio in the Yokosuka Prefecture. First off you must leave a gate from base and turn left. Keep going forward, but just to warn you there will be curves along the way. Then when you see a white building you have arrived! Not to far right? Well you can walk there if it is a nice day for you or if your car is broken down. There are other Sport Xebios in Japan but this is just one of them out of one hundred.
To wrap this all up, the Sport Xebio is just the perfect sport supermarket to get your clothing. Along next to it are some other store you can shop at and places to fish, play, and skate at. This is the shop that fits in with my personality and hopefully fits into your even if you are at the beach relaxing.

The Daiei
Mall
Review by NH (Kahler)
We all want to shop here in Japan but some shops are far away and you don’t want to waste time traveling. If you want something close, yet gives you the true Japanese shopping experience, then go to Daiei Mall.
The Daiei Mall has many shops and a variety of restaurants to suit the preferences and needs of a variety of personalities. They even have a supermarket, and a multi-plex theater. The best part about Daiei Mall it is just a block away from Yokosuka Naval Base! So there is no need for traveling a long distance.
Come and let me show you around Daiei Mall! The mall has five floors and two parking lots! On the first floor there is a stage where people perform. It is fun to sit and rest your tired feet and enjoy a performance from local students or musicians. Plus, the supermarket is on the first floor and as well some clothing stores. Now, lets explore the second floor. Here, there are all types of shops like The Gap and much, much more! On the third floor, there are more shops where you can find souvenirs, household goods and many other useful things such as books to read when you are bored! Now let’s go to the fourth floor. On this there is a lot of restaurants to choose from and their smells and taste are so good that you would want to go back. Finally, on the fifth floor, there is a movie theater with movies in Japanese and a super fun game room that you will love playing at, and a bowling alley!
Now that you heard all of that, lets time travel to the beginning of Daiei Mall. Daiei Mall was created by Isao Nakauchi in Osaka, Japan in 1957. Daiei Mall has its own industry. Daiei industry have over 3,000 stores that are controlled. Daiei Mall used to be a retailer now it's a shopping mall. This was the worst sale in their history because their sales declined to a quarter in a year of 2003. But the retail chain expanded rapidly in the 1970s to 1980s. The other market chain almost destroyed their sales record. Now in the present day daiei mall starts to build up their chain.
Here are the directions to Daiei mall from the main gate you turn right then right again! Plus if you are from the womble gate pass four traffic lights then the fifth traffic light turn right. If you can't find it they are located in 24-12 Honcho, Yokosuka Kanagawa Prefecture 238-0041 so you could type this in your phone or GPS.
They have a sale in which the price is 50% off of everything! Everyday they open 8:00a.m-11:00p.m plus when it is a japanese holiday open 9:00a.m-9:00p.m. So if you love shopping then you would love this place. I hope you have a happy time Shopping!

Yokosuka’s Commissary
Review by HT (Kahler)
Are you the type of person that is dedicated to eating fresh fruits and colorful vegetables, gets overjoyed by sweets that will cause you to go speechless, or gets elated from culinary arts? If so the Commissary Store is the perfect place for you. The Commissary Store is an extraordinary grocery store with fresh and juicy fruits, well kept meats, and even sweet candy and party chips that will make you coming back for more.
This delightful grocery store even has services that can help you if you are in a rush or just wants something joyful to eat. Some of these services include a bakery with scrumptious bread and a deli right next to it so you can get your juicy slices of meat. For those who want a little spice of Japanese or who love rice, fish, you will find a sushi department.
If you think that’s great, this is even better. Coupons! Yes you heard me, coupons! There is a generous amount of coupons in the front if you forget any. But if you do go and they do not have that coupon you are looking for and you don’t want to go through all that trouble searching through the endless bins and get frustrated, then just get yourself and Commissary Store reward card. It will digitally hold all your coupons for you. Even that one coupon that is very dear and special to the bottom of your heart. All you have to do then is scan your card at the checkout register and voila!
The reason I chose this spot is because it is a very well organized grocery store and people should come and buy their groceries and household items here. The services that they kindly offer is very useful to people that are in a rush, needs a decorated cake for a birthday, or needs money from the ATM. It is unique in its own special way even there are many like it. Commissary Stores worldwide on military bases.
Make sure you come and visit. You may wonder how in the world do I get there. Well that’s easy. From the Kanagawa, Yokosuka’s Womble Gate, head in past the hospital. Then turn right on the next turn. Drive forward passed McDonalds, then turn left near the bank. Drive straight and park your car or you can take a right and park closer to the door. Once you have reached your destination you must know if it’s open. The store’s normal hours from Monday to Friday is 0900-2000 and from Saturday to Sunday it is 0900-1900. The early bird hours from Monday to Friday is 0800-0900 but there are no early bird hours on Saturday and or Sunday. If you would like to call them dial 011-81-46-816-7562.

Claire’s
Review by JF (Kahler)
We all had a moment when you get ready in the morning and you look in your closet full of clothes, but you know you’re never going to wear any of them. You feel like you wear the same outfit over and over again and nothing seems to suit your mood. Sometimes just a belt, a hair band, or a great pair of earrings will change a tired outfit into something new and fresh. If you are in the need of stylish accessories to freshen your tired wardrobe, why not go to Claire’s? Almost all the time there are sales and clearanced items on great accessories to jazz up your style! Claire’s was founded in 1961 by Rowland Schaefer, and has been open for more than 50 years! There are over 3000 stores spread along more than 40 countries around the world. Claire's vision is to “Inspire girls and women around the world to become their best selves by providing products and experiences that empower them to express their own unique styles. They are even the #1 ear piercer in the U.S.
Like most companies, Claire’s uses celebrity endorsers to advertise their products. Katy Perry is one of them. This really helps them because Katy Perry and other stars are a big influence on teenagers around the world. Everybody wants to be like their favorite celebrity, so why not be like Katy Perry?
I chose Claire’s even though I’m still a diamond in the rough when it comes to fashion. Claire’s always meets the standards of my changing styles and interests. I don’t even have to worry about getting the same things because the stock changes every season. But, whenever I go there, I get kind of scared because most of the people are teenagers, and then there’s me, and 11 year old just standing there like a pole.
Back in November, I went to Claire’s with my BFFs. We wanted to get matching accessories, but we didn’t have enough money. Instead of settling for something else, we called my mom. At the time, she was in a different store on a different floor in the mall. Once the cashier scanned the items, the total was a fraction of what we expected because they were all on sale! We started cracking up on how oblivious we were to all the signs and price tags. We still talk about it like it was a million years ago, not a few months.
Now, close those closet doors, put away those old outfits, and get on your way to Claire’s. Who cares what people think about your fashion anyway? Just be you, not what everyone wants you to be. As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
If you’re interested, the directions are below.
Directions to Mores City walking from Womble Gate: Walk straight and turn right when you get to route 16, then keep walking. Later, turn left on route 26, then keep walking. Once you’re near the train station, Mores City will be on your right. Take the escalator, elevator or stairs to the 2nd floor. You’ll soon find the entrance to Claire’s, no matter which direction you turn.
These are some Japanese phrases you might need:
1. Ikura wa nani desu ka? = How much is this?
2. Kuregito kaado daijoubu? = Do you accept credit cards?

Daiei Mall

The Deiei Mall is a Mall near the Yokosuka Naval Base.I chose the Deiei Mall because I have went there a lot of times, and also because it is a fun place. I’ve been there before and I would still come here because I like playing in the arcades on different floors but mostly go to the one close the theater. I would also come back because I also like hanging out with my friends there. You would maybe experience fun in the arcade but also disappointment for not getting a prize. You would also maybe experience shopping.
I visited the Deiei Mall at January 3 , winter. If you start at the Main Gate it will take about 4 minutes to the front of Deiei Mall. First when you are at the Main Gate you have to turn right and when you walk straight for few seconds you would see an atm. Then if you see the atm just keep walking straight you would see a police station on the right. After you see the police station you just keep walking straight until you see a huge building with a glass entrance and a Mos Burger on the side of the building. Also when you are walking straight you would see a Lawson and a curry restaurant.
When you arrived at the Daiei Mall you would maybe or sometimes smell food. You would see the glass entrance close by. When I arrived I first browsed through the different floors to see what there is. You would see restaurants, a movie theater, a grocery store, a bakery, few different arcades, a 100 yen store, etc. Sometimes there would be a performance in the middle of the mall. You would smell different kinds of food on different floors. You would taste something like american food, italian food, and japanese food if you buy them for brunch, lunch, or dinner.
For me my favorite would be the arcades, the movie theater, and the restaurants. I like the arcade the best to spend some time with my friends. If you will go to the arcades I recommend the arcade close the theater. It has the most games including another arcade connected.
Helpful japanese phrases would be asking where is the bathroom which is “toi le wa doko desu ka”. You could also use “ko re ikura desu ka” which means how much is this.
This is a picture of the entrance of the mall. On the bottom left you could see that is the main entrance to the mall. You would see this when you climb up the stairs and turn around.
This is what the left side looks like. There is a small park with a open field as you can see in the center and in the back of the picture you could see benches so you can eat there or have a picnic. The entrance to the Daiei Mall is more on the right. Also on the left you could see the ocean if you go there. Also if you go a little more left you would see a pretty garden place and its next to the ocean so it is a good place to just eat lunch you bought at Daiei, or some where else.
This is is what it looks like when you look at the middle from a higher floor. On the bottom left can see bars, that is the stage that sometimes has a performance on. The stage is very close to the grocery store. The grocery store is just a little bit farther in, just walk left when looking at the stage.
Note: I would recommend browsing the different stores before doing anything else.

Minato Mirai 21
Review by JH
(Arnold)
Minato Mirai 21 is a seaside urban area in central Yokohama whose name means "harbor of the future". It has many large high-rises, including the Landmark Tower, which was Japan's tallest building from 1993 until 2014. The area was a large shipyard until the 1980s, when development began to turn it into a new city center.
Minato Mirai is blessed with a great location along the water and has a wealth of attractions. Visitors to the area will be able to find shopping centers, hotels, a convention center, an amusement park, a relaxation center with hot spring baths, museums and park space.
Escalator maze at the Landmark Plaza
Intercontinental Hotel and Cosmo World Ferris Wheel
Located along the waterfront, the buildings of the Minato Mirai Chuo district ("central district") form the distinctive skyline of Yokohama. At 296 meters, the Landmark Tower is the most recognizable feature. The three Queen's Towers are located beside, each one being a little shorter than the next, followed by the Pan Pacific Hotel and the Pacifico convention center, one of the largest in Japan, which includes the rounded Intercontinental Hotel. The district extends inland, where redevelopment is still ongoing.
Connected to the Chuo district, across from the Pacifico, is a large man made island which constitutes the Minato Mirai Shinko District ("new harbor district"). The most recognizable feature of the island is the Cosmo World Ferris Wheel, which displays the time and was for a period the world's largest clock.
Entertainment
There are many options for entertainment in the area. The Landmark Tower has an observatory on its 69th floor called the Sky Garden. The Cosmo World amusement park is spread out along the waterfront beside the Queen's Towers and on the man made island of the Shinko District, and offers both exciting roller coasters and attractions for kids. For more sedate entertainment there is the Manyo Club, a great place for relaxation.
Sky Garden Observatory
Hours: 10:00 to 21:00 (until 22:00 on Saturdays)
Admission ends 30 minutes before closing time.
Closed: No closing days
Admission: 1000 yen
Located 273 meters in the air, the Landmark Tower's Sky Garden is one of the highest observatories in the country. The elevator that takes visitors up to the observatory was the fastest in the world when it was built. There is a bar at the observatory with impressive views of the surrounding area.
Cosmo World
Hours: 11:00 to 20:00 (longer hours on weekends and in summer, shorter in winter)
Closed: Thursdays (or following day if Thursday is a national holiday)
Admission: No entrance fee, attractions cost 300-800 yen each
The Cosmo World amusement park has a handful of roller coaster rides, carnival attractions, a kid's zone and a large Ferris wheel that doubles as a clock. In the evening the park is illuminated, and adds to the night view of the city.
I choosed Landmark tower because its a fabulous place to go with a family. The area around Landmark tower is filled with fun. I already went there many times but its so such a wonderful place i wanted to choose it as my project. When i go back to Landmark tower i hope i find more unique things they have there.
The travel time that it took with a train for me was about fourty minutes in spring. From Yokosuka-Chuo to Yokohama was about thirty minutes, it has three stops, it also cost three hundred sixty yen. From Yokohama to Minatomirai it has two stops, it was about ten minutes. The cost was one hundred eighty yen.
After i get there i see street performers everywhere. I smell doughnuts around the outside of the Queens tower. There are many activities around Landmark tower. You can go to cosmo world, the ice skating rink, cup noodle museum or inside Landmark tower.

For the best of Yokosuka project I have chosen Yoshida at Diae Mall. I chose Yoshida because I like doing crafts on my spare time. I have been to Yoshida before ,I would like to return to Yoshida because they have really interesting art supplies and crafts to do . When I go back to Yoshida I would like to experience more interesting art supplies and other amazing things there.
I went to Yoshida on December 9, 2014 in winter. My family and I started to walk to Yoshida from the Yokosuka navel base main gate to the Diae Mall. The Mileage/km Covered from Yokosuka navel base to Diae Mall is about a theird of a mile and takes about 6 minutes to get there. If you are walking from the Main Gate to Diae mall you will go strait until you get to the main street. When you get to the street you will turn right and walk strait until you see the big bridge over the intersection. If you look towards your right you will see the Diae Mall. After you go in you will need to go to the thierd floor. Then after you get to the thierd floor you will turn left and go straight until you see the sign that says YOKOHAMA yoshida MOTOMACHI. Then you are there. When my family and I got there I smelled a bunch of different foods like ramen, burgers, and other great smelling foods. http://www.shoppers-plaza.jp/images/shop/255_image1.jpg . I first saw the escolators that lead up to the first floor, when you get up to the first floor you will see a shoe shop clothing shops and desert shops. The most special thing there that I saw was the area yoshida was in, because of the things all of the stores held. Some stores that I saw had lots of many different types of japanese treats to buy, that looked delicuious to try.
Some things that I learned while I was there to do fro next time was to go during a time it wouldn’t be crowded. Maybe go later in the evening, also if trying new foods at the court there are pictures that explains what it is. At first I didn’t know that soooo I got shrimp ramen, it was okay but I didn’t really like the shrimp. Other tips to know before going are to maybe have friends that speak japanese so they could help you look for what you need. When going there you might want to know some japanese words or phrases like gomenasi, and sumemasen.
